Academic standouts and student-athletes from Centauri High School are giving back, and in a meaningful way.  An idea that stemmed out of several meetings held by the Conejos County Coalition against Opiod/Drug use is being applied by the North Conejos School District.  Utilizing exemplar students from Centauri High School, the Falcons are taking their message to their very own younger peers at La Jara and Manassa Elementary.

“Opioid and drug use in the area is extensive and unfortunately, readily available,” stated Superintendent Curt Wilson.  “On top of all other actions we take to keep this destruction out of our schools, we decided to illicit the support of the most influential individuals in the district, and that is our own students as they have more influence and power than adults.”   Wilson continued, “With our own students delivering the curriculum, it is more likely to stick.  Attempting to create a culture of what “we” do and don’t is accepted better from those who students are familiar with, and what these stellar CHS students say has a huge impact on the future decisions of our younger Falcons.”

Along with their message, CHS standouts name their individual contributions to the district and mention some of their accolades, scholarships and activities.  All share the same message: “I was able to do this because I choose to not do drugs.”  Principals in the district carry out the plan to educate younger students, coordinating times and places and selecting various students from Centauri High School to present.

The Conejos County Coalition, spearheaded by Joseph Valdez, local pharmacist, began meeting with local superintendents and other interested entities to provide curriculum materials and discuss how to educate students from making choices that have devastating consequences, especially locally.  The fruit of that effort is now evident in North Conejos School District’s continued effort to utilize model students to influence their own district students for good by deterring interest in opioid and drug use, much easier to accomplish than to treat addiction.  More educational sessions are already planned for April and May.
