Information from our school nurse....

Several students in our school district have been diagnosed with Influenze or the "flu".  The flu can be very contagious and can cause mild to severe illness.  The symptoms to watch for are:  fever and or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, tiredness, and more commonly in children are vomiting and diarrhea.  If your child has any or these symptoms for more than 24-48 hours then they should NOT come to school and it is recommended that they see their regular doctor.  Children should also stay home if they have a fever over 100 degrees.  Symptoms of the flu usually start 1-4 days after the virus enters the body, which means you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick as well as when you are sick.

The flu is spread in droplets released by coughing and sneezing.  It usually spreads from person to person, but people may be infected by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.

To help prevent the flu, avoid close contact with people who are sick, and stay at home if you are sick.  Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  If no tissue is available then cough or sneeze into the bend of your arm.  Wash hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.  Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home.  Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.

Hopefully by working together we can minimize the spread of illness in our schools.  If you have any questions pelase call your child's school and they will help you contact the nurse.
